La Rassegna Mensile di Israel

The first issue of the Rassegna Mensile di Israel was published in 1925 and from that year onwards, with the exception of the period between 1939 and 1948 when publication was interrupted first because of the anti-Jewish laws and later by events related to the Second World War, it has continued to appear.   Initially owned and managed by Dante Lattes and
Alfonso Pacifici, when it reappeared after 1948 it became the property of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, the umbrella organization which by law represents Italian Judaism in all its dealings with the Italian government and whose leadership is elected by the members of the communities.

The Rassegna’s main target was that of supplying to its readers information concerning the religious, political, social and cultural problems which concern Judaism as such, and to put before them the results of recent research in all these fields.

It has published, throughout the years, collections of articles on a variety of specific subjects, such as Sephardi and Ashkenazi culture, the Yiddish world, medieval Italian Hebrew poems, the status of religious minorities during the Italian Rinascimento, testimonials of Shoah survivors as well considerable documentation concerning the history of the various Jewish groups who have settled in Italy throughout the ages.

As such, it has become a fundamental source for all those who are interested in the history, philosophy and literature of Italian Jews.
