University of Illinois Press Joins Current Scholarship Program
The University of Illinois Press, the not-for-profit publishing division of the University of Illinois, and JSTOR, the preservation archive and research platform that is part of the not-for-profit ITHAKA, announced an agreement today to make leading journals from the Press available worldwide as part of the Current Scholarship Program.
The Current Scholarship Program is a new collaboration initiated by University of California Press and JSTOR and first announced on August 13, 2009. Together, participants in this Program aim to create an improved online work environment for faculty and students by bringing complete journal runs from multiple publishers together in one place, to ease the burden on librarians of negotiating separate license agreements with a multitude of publishers and independent titles, and to promote a more cost-effective publishing environment for the scholarly community.
"For the last several years the University of Illinois Press and JSTOR have worked together through the History Cooperative, building strong ties of respect and trust," said Willis G. Regier, Director of the University of Illinois Press. "We take this step with the blessings of our colleagues in the University of Illinois Library and with high anticipation for our journals."
Current and historical content from at least ten University of Illinois Press-published journals will be available on a re-designed JSTOR in 2011. This will offer faculty and students around the world access to current issues alongside back issues and a growing set of primary source materials from libraries easily and seamlessly. JSTOR’s nearly 6,000 library participants worldwide will be able to license the Press’s current journals, either individually or as part of current issue collections, together with JSTOR back issue collections in a single transaction. University of Illinois Press-published journals available as part of the Program will include American Journal of Psychology, American Music, Journal of Aesthetic Education, and Journal of American Ethnic History among others. The journals will also be preserved in Portico, the digital preservation service that is also part of ITHAKA.
"The University of Illinois Press has been a leader in promoting digital scholarship, innovation, and new publishing collaborations in the humanities," said Michael Spinella, JSTOR Managing Director. "The Press not only shares our aim to deliver excellent scholarship at good value to libraries, faculty, and students, but brings a spirit of cooperation and a strong desire to support new forms of scholarship using digital technology. We are thrilled to be working with them to advance scholarship through the Program."
With the addition of the University of Illinois Press, the current issues of at least forty journals will be available from JSTOR for the 2011 subscription year. Other organizations are being encouraged to join the Program.
Rebecca Simon, Associate Director of University of California Press and Director of Journals + Digital Publishing added, "It is terrific that the University of Illinois Press is joining this effort and bringing their fine portfolio of titles to the Program. The more like-minded participants we have, the greater the benefits we are able to deliver to libraries and to users."

JSTOR Announces Arts & Sciences VIII Collection
Dear Colleague -
JSTOR is pleased to announce the launch of the Arts & Sciences VIII Collection, which will include a minimum of one hundred forty (140) titles when it is completed at the end of 2011. This collection extends JSTOR's coverage in disciplines across the social sciences and humanities, with new and expanded focus on art & art history, classical studies, philosophy, language & literature, and music.
With the launch of this collection, we continue our commitment to the scholarly community to keep participation fees as low as possible. As part of a not-for-profit, mission-based organization, we are particularly pleased to be able to provide additional fee reductions on Arts & Sciences VIII in light of the current economic situation affecting libraries and information centers around the world. Because of our growing participant base, we are able to spread the costs associated with the creation of this collection, along with the annual maintenance costs required to maintain the long-term preservation of the collection, across a broader community of institutions. In the higher education community, for instance, depending on your JSTOR classification, the one-time Archive Capital Fees (ACF) are 5%-10% lower, while the recurring Annual Access Fees (AAF) are 15%-23% lower than our previous two Arts & Sciences collections. We have not raised participation fees for any of our multi-discipline collections since the archive was launched in 1997.
As with other JSTOR collections, the Annual Access Fee (AAF) will be prorated to reflect the number of titles included in the collection as they are added over time. For those institutions initiating participation in 2009, the AAF will be waived. The AAF in 2010 will be prorated to 20% of the full fee.
As well, we will be allowing institutions to pay the one-time Archive Capital Fee (ACF) over a period of three fiscal years. We hope this will provide additional budgeting flexibility for those institutions that wish to initiate participation in this collection in this challenging economic climate.
Highlights of the Arts & Sciences VIII collection:
- More than thirty rare 19th and early 20th century American Art periodicals form part of this collection, including 291, created in 1915 by Alfred Stieglitz and Bradley, His Book from the private press founded by William H. Bradley, one of the premiere graphic artists of his time. The addition of these special titles is the result of a partnership between JSTOR and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, and the Brooklyn Museum. Eleven of these periodicals are immediately available in the collection, with the remaining titles available by the second quarter of 2010. A short video (5 minutes) has been prepared to give you a glimpse into these remarkable periodicals.
- New titles in language & literature, history, philosophy, and classical studies will add international depth to JSTOR, with leading journals such as Zeitschrift für deutsches Altertum und deutsche Literatur, Journal of South Asian Literature, Revista Chilena de Literatura, Revue d'histoire litteraire de la France, and English in Africa (language & literature); Scottish Historical Review, Revue historique, Agricultural History Review from the British Agricultural History Society (history); Revue philosophique de la France et de l'étranger (philosophy); and Glotta: Zeitschrift für griechische und lateinische Sprache (classical philology).
- Music coverage will be expanded to include education titles such as the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education and College Music Symposium from the College Music Society. Other notable titles include Musica Disciplina from the American Institute of Musicology, founded in 1946, and African Music, published by the International Library of African Music.
- New titles in education include Research in Higher Education and Academe: Bulletin of the AAUP, founded in 1915 with the formation of the American Association of University Professors.
The first group of titles in Arts & Sciences VIII has been released, and participants in the collection will immediately gain access to:
- Geschichte und Gesellschaft

JSTOR Announces the Appointment of Mary Rose Muccie to the Position of Current Journals Director
Mary Rose Muccie will join JSTOR, a service of the not-for-profit organization ITHAKA, on October 26, 2009 as Current Journals Director where she will lead efforts to cultivate and deepen relationships with university presses and scholarly associations, building their participation in the new Current Scholarship Program announced last month by JSTOR and University of California Press. She will also manage the Program's operations and lead its business strategy going forward.
"The Current Scholarship Program continues JSTOR's long history of sustainable collaborative programs that benefit libraries, publishers, and scholars," says Muccie. "I look forward to being a part of this important solution and to working with colleagues at all levels to make it a success."
A highly regarded leader in digital publishing, Muccie has led Project MUSE, an online aggregation of humanities and social science journals that is part of Johns Hopkins University Press for the last three years. During that time she initiated a substantial upgrade of features and functionality of the MUSE website and reworked MUSE policies to provide a better return for publishers and enable growth for the organization. Prior to joining MUSE, Mary Rose served for 13 years at the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), most recently as Publisher, overseeing both their journals and book publications. At both MUSE and SIAM, Muccie collaborated with JSTOR, first to digitize and make available SIAM's archival journal content and later to establish connections between the JSTOR and MUSE platforms to ease faculty and student use of the content across the sites.
"I can think of no better candidate to lead this new initiative," commented Michael Spinella, ITHAKA's Executive Vice President of Global Content Alliances and JSTOR Managing Director. "We are absolutely thrilled that Mary Rose is joining us. She has a deep understanding of digital publishing and the diverse needs of publishing organizations, a track record of delivering value and results, and an infectious dedication demonstrated throughout her career to serving the scholarly community."
The Current Scholarship Program will build on what JSTOR is today and aims to provide a new and sustainable approach to online publishing. It will make current and historical scholarly content available on a single, integrated platform, provide a single point of purchase and access for librarians and end users around the world, and ensure its long-term preservation. "I am excited by the vision for this initiative," said Muccie. "It recognizes the benefits that can be realized through scale and collaboration, but also values in meaningful ways the independence that press and society publishers need in setting prices and other areas to be successful." The first current content will be available to libraries beginning in 2011.
Muccie will start work later this month and relocate back to the Philadelphia area, her home for many years before joining MUSE. She will work in ITHAKA's Princeton office.

JSTOR Training Available
We, Jenny McKillop and Michael Gallagher, would like to introduce ourselves as part of JSTOR's recently reorganized Education & Outreach team. We are dedicated to assisting you in training others to use JSTOR. As the school year begins for some, we'd like to point out some JSTOR training resources available to you, free of charge.
The Training & Materials page has downloadable resources for training and education, to save you time:
- -Webinars on using JSTOR (online live and recorded)
- -PowerPoint presentations to train others on using JSTOR
- -JSTOR Search widget for your library web page (can include your proxy server for remote access)
- -Materials to download: How-to poster, FAQ Handout, JSTOR logos & screen shots and more
The Help documentation includes detailed search help, which spells out how to refine a search.
The Tutorials page has many short videos on using JSTOR. New: Finding or Avoiding Reviews; Advanced Search; Primary vs. Secondary Sources; and more. The YouTube versions can be embedded into your LibGuides.
The Resources for Librarians page has links to stats, policies, upcoming events, and more.
You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter!
Some of the training resources, such as the "How to Use JSTOR" poster and the "Reviews in JSTOR: How to Find or Avoid them" video tutorial were suggested by librarians as materials that would be helpful to them. What do you wish JSTOR could help you with? If you have questions or suggestions, please contact training@jstor.org. Our dedicated Education & Outreach team will be happy to work with you!

Collections from Aluka
The following new content has been added to the collections currently hosted by Aluka.
Struggles for Freedom in Southern Africa Collection
There are over 100 objects available in the South African Communist Party Collection. This collection contains a selection of documents on the history of the South African Communist Party. The documents were selected by Dale McKinley from the Simons Papers (BC 1081) at the University of Cape Town and the Dale McKinley papers at the South African History Archive. The SACP, founded in 1921 under the name Communist Party of South Africa, was banned by the apartheid South African government in 1950. Operating underground and in exile, it was involved in key events such as the Freedom Charter in 1955, the launching of armed struggle in 1961, and the organization of grassroots resistance inside South Africa and also international solidarity over the period from 1960 to 1994.

JSTOR and University of California Press Announce Current Scholarship Program
University of California Press, the not-for-profit publishing arm of the University of California, and JSTOR, the preservation archive and research platform that is part of the not-for-profit ITHAKA, today announced that they will work in partnership – and encourage others to join them – to make current and historical scholarly content available on a single, integrated platform, to provide a single point of purchase and access for librarians and end users around the world, and to ensure its long-term preservation.
Beginning in 2011, current content from all University of California Press published journals, including those from scholarly societies, will be hosted on a re-designed JSTOR platform. Faculty and students around the world will be able to access all licensed content on JSTOR – current issues, back issues, and a growing set of primary source materials from libraries – easily and seamlessly. JSTOR's nearly 6,000 library participants worldwide will be able to license the Press’s current journals, either individually or as part of current issue collections, together with JSTOR back issue collections in a single transaction. The journals will also continue to be preserved in Portico, the digital preservation service that is also part of ITHAKA.
"We hear from many publishers about the challenges they face in managing technology and achieving the scale needed to build visibility and a widespread subscription base for their journals." said Michael Spinella, JSTOR Managing Director, "At the same time libraries and users often find it difficult to license and use high-quality publications scattered among hundreds of different publishers and sites. This new effort is aimed at providing users seamless access to a wide range of current and historical content, while enabling libraries to support their access in more cost-effective ways."
"This should really help publishers, libraries, and the community," added Rebecca Simon, Associate Director of University of California Press and Director of the Journals + Digital Publishing Division. "UC Press and our society clients will host our publications on a platform where we benefit from rich functionality and wider exposure to libraries than we have today, where JSTOR's millions of users will be able to access the full breadth of our content in a place they visit regularly, and where libraries will be able to add our publications to their holdings with the ease of a single license agreement and invoice from JSTOR, while also being assured of their preservation over time."
The Current Scholarship Program – as the effort will be known – grew out of a long-standing relationship and dialogue between UC Press and JSTOR who share an understanding of the problems facing scholarly communications and a deep desire to work together to craft a sustainable publishing model that embodies academic values. The effort was also informed by research conducted by Ithaka S+R, the strategy and research arm of ITHAKA, over the past several years and the group's ongoing work to understand and develop sustainable business models and support innovation in the development and dissemination of digital scholarship.
Driving the partnership is an articulated set of principles, among them: supporting the broad dissemination of quality scholarship through affordable and sustainable means, promoting fair and transparent pricing, facilitating seamless access to authoritative content of all kinds, and ensuring reliable, long-term preservation and access to scholarship. Organizations interested in joining the Program in the future – whether commercial or non-commercial – will be encouraged to embrace these fundamentals as well.
"Now is the time for new approaches that will enable the academic community to thrive in the future and to do so in ways and with organizations that understand and support scholarly values," said Lynne Withey, Director of University of California Press. "The Press's purposes and interests are well aligned with our colleagues at ITHAKA and with those of other scholarly organizations and universities and colleges around the world. We know what we are after, and we are eager to have a greater, lasting impact by working together in ways that neither organization, nor our colleagues in other organizations and institutions, could alone."
In addition to easing access to scholarly content, the redesigned JSTOR platform will also offer enhanced functionality to support the publication of new digital scholarship. Working with Atypon Systems, whose Literatum technology is underlying both JSTOR and UC Press's current platforms, the new platform will provide for the delivery of multimedia content, increased personalization features, and new navigation and visualization features. This development will help authors and their publishers take better advantage of technology in the creation, explication, and impact of their work.

Release of Faceted Search Postponed; Data for Research Available
We announced in June that we expected to release a new faceted search feature for the JSTOR platform in July. Since that time, we have continued to test and adjust the new functionality, placing a particular emphasis on search speed and usability testing. We have recently concluded that the faceted search implementation does not yet meet our standards for performance and ease of use, so we are postponing the release of the new functionality in order to make further refinements. We will keep you posted on our progress. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact JSTOR User Services (support@jstor.org).
In the meantime, we encourage you to try a beta service we are calling "Data for Research" (dfr.jstor.org). The original intention of the Data for Research tool was to make it easier to fulfill requests for data sets and support data mining needs. However, the DfR beta also makes it possible to search and browse across all JSTOR collections, using a type of faceted search interface. The journal content on this beta site is updated 1-2 weeks after each content release on the main site.
With DfR, researchers can:
- conduct full-text and fielded searching of the entire JSTOR archive using a powerful faceted search interface. Using this interface one can quickly and easily define content of interest through an iterative process of searching and results filtering.
- view document-level data including word frequencies, citations, and key terms.
- request and download datasets associated with the content selected.
We're very eager to receive feedback on the functionality, and would appreciate hearing from you and your communities. A special feedback form has been established for this project (http://dfr.jstor.org/requests/contact/) and is linked to all of the pages of the DfR site.

JSTOR Update
Faceted Searching to be Added to JSTOR
JSTOR will introduce a new "faceted search" feature in early July. The faceted search will offer a number of different options to expand and refine search results. Faceted searching and search results will allow you to easily visualize how the returned articles are distributed among categories, or "facets". For instance, with faceted search you can see how many of your results are in each discipline, how many are book reviews or full-length articles, and how many articles contain images, among other options. You'll be able to modify your search results by choosing specific facets, and all search results pages will now incorporate the facets sidebar to make modifications easier.
Several webinars have been scheduled to provide overviews of the new search functionality. If you're interested in seeing a preview of the new functionality, we encourage you to sign up for one of the sessions this week. Screenshots of the new functionality have also been posted on JSTOR's Facebook page, in the photo album "New Faceted Search Interface". In order to register for a webinar, please follow one of the links below.

JSTOR Announces Fees for 19th Century British Pamphlets Collection and Call for Content
Dear Participants-
In February we launched the 19th Century British Pamphlets Collection with an initial 8,000 pamphlets from a collection of more than 20,000 (1 million pages) that will be preserved and made available through JSTOR. These pamphlets are from 7 leading institutions in the United Kingdom and were digitized by the University of Southampton library with funding from the JISC Digitisation Programme.
The pamphlets are freely accessible to all JSTOR participants through June 30, and many institutions have begun making use of this unique and valuable content. We and the contributing institutions have been delighted by this. We have heard positive comments from institutions that would never otherwise have access to materials of this kind as well as from those that have their own pamphlet holdings that can now be expanded with the addition of these electronic collections. Researchers have also been exploring the content and sharing their findings and ideas for how we can maximize their potential online.
Our intent in adding primary sources like pamphlets to JSTOR is to enrich the research experience for scholars and students by uniting secondary literature and the foundational, raw materials on which much research is based, and to provide a means for libraries with digital collections to ensure they are preserved and to share them with one another in sustainable ways. An important motivation in the 19th Century British Pamphlets project was to find a way to unite disparate collections held at many universities into a single, highly functional resource that could be preserved, used, and supported by all.
The fees for the 19th Century British Pamphlets Collection reflect these motivations. Fees follow the traditional JSTOR classification model and include an Archive Capital Fee (ACF) for preservation and an Annual Access Fee (AAF) to cover access related expenses. The AAF ranges from $250 to $950. Detailed fee information is available online, as are riders to institutional agreements to add the 19th Century British Pamphlets Collection to your JSTOR holdings. The AAF will be waived for 2009 for all institutions that elect to participate before June 30th.
Participating institutions will also be encouraged to contribute their own digitized pamphlets in the future so that the corpus will grow over time. This will enable all those electing to participate to benefit from access to content digitized by other libraries and to contribute to the costs of maintaining and preserving the content in electronic form. We will be issuing a call for additional contributions in the future. We will be open to contributions of any pamphlet collections that have been digitized and that may be of interest to humanists, social scientists, and life scientists. Pamphlets do not need to be limited to the 19th Century nor to Britain.
Please contact us at participation@jstor.org with any questions you may have or to talk with us about a collection you may wish to contribute in the future.
Best regards,
Jason E. Phillips

JSTOR Offers Collection Savings for Arts & Sciences Participants
Dear Participant:
Today, JSTOR renamed its Arts & Sciences Complement to Arts & Sciences VII. This marks the completion of a collection launched in 2004 that now includes more than 180 titles from 35 of our 50 disciplines. There are 2,882 institutions participating in this collection today. For those not currently participating, now may be a good time to consider adding Arts & Sciences VII to your JSTOR holdings.
Arts & Sciences VII delivers a substantial and diverse set of content at fees that are substantially reduced for those already invested in JSTOR. Participation fees (ACF and AAF) are reduced by 15-50% depending on the number of additional Arts & Sciences collections in which an institution currently participates.
A content overview and summary of the savings tiers are provided below. Because Arts & Sciences VII is a completed collection, your institution will gain access to the entire back runs of an additional 180 titles on your first day of participation. Institutions that have 4 or more other Arts & Sciences collections and participate in Arts & Sciences VII pay only an additional $2-$20 per title each year.
Collection Overview
- 183 titles in 35 disciplines
- 4,059,613 pages = 995 linear feet of shelf space
- Notable titles include:
Africa: Journal of the International African Institute
Business History Review
Central European History
Daedalus
Econometric Theory
International Political Science Review
Journal of Marketing
Philosophy
Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society
Proceedings of the American Philosophical Association
Sankhya
Third World Quarterly - International title coverage: 15 countries
Savings Tiers
- 2 A&S collections = 15% savings
- 3 A&S collections = 30% savings
- 4+ A&S collections = 50% savings
JSTOR was founded to help the academic community transition to and thrive in the digital environment, while also working to reduce system-wide costs. JSTOR has never raised fees for any Arts & Sciences collection – something we are proud to have been able to do with the community’s support – and the additional savings associated with the Arts & Sciences VII collection reflect our on-going commitment to increase the economic value we offer back to our participating institutions.
We hope you will consider participating in Arts & Sciences VII. A summary of the content in the collection is attached and also available on our website. For more information, please contact us at participation@jstor.org.

JSTOR Trial Access for Corporate and For-Profit Research Institutions
Dear Colleagues -
We are pleased to announce that trial access to the JSTOR archive is now available for corporate and for-profit research institutions. The trial allows you to explore the extensive collection of content available through the Corporate & For-Profit Access Initiative and is intended as a limited-time evaluation access period for you to become familiar with the archive and the benefits it can provide to your organization.
The trial begins on the Monday of your choice, lasts 7 days and is shareable with up to 10 colleagues. To initiate your trial, simply let us know the date you would like it to begin.
The collection of content available to for-profit institutions currently in¬cludes nearly 550 leading scholarly journals, with new titles added to it regularly. We expect the collection to contain more than 600 titles by the end of 2009. The collection draws from the 50 disciplines represented in the archive, but focuses on Economics, Finance, Business, Math, Statistics, and the Life Sciences.
The participation fees for for-profit institutions include a tiered Annual Access Fee (AAF) based on usage plus a one-time Archive Capital Fee (ACF). The tiered AAF allows participants access to a broad range of content, while requiring them to pay only for the titles that receive a significant amount of use. Each institution's one-time ACF ensures that JSTOR has the necessary resources to fulfill its archival obligation as technology evolves.
Early Adopter Incentive
For institutions that initiate participation in JSTOR before June 30, 2009, the one-time ACF will be reduced 50%.
To learn more about participation in JSTOR's Corporate & For-Profit Access Initiative, please contact Library Relations at participation@jstor.org.
Sincerely,
Jason Phillips

JSTOR Now Available to For-Profit Academic Institutions
Dear Colleagues -
We are delighted to announce that the JSTOR Archive is now available to for-profit academic institutions around the world.
The JSTOR Archive includes over one thousand leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work. Journals run from volume one issue one through recent years, with new content added annually. The entire corpus is full-text searchable, offers search term highlighting, includes high-quality images, and is interlinked by millions of citations and references.
More than 5,500 non-profit educational and research institutions in 140 countries participate in JSTOR today, including nearly every 4-year higher education institution in the United States. The JSTOR Archive is one of the most widely recognized and heavily used online resources among faculty and students globally. It is valued for its reliability, ease of use, breadth of content, disciplinary coverage, and commitment to long-term preservation.
Institutions join JSTOR by participating in collections. JSTOR offers nine multi-disciplinary and eight discipline-specific collections. Larger collections include upwards of 100 journals. Institutions may begin participation in any collection at any time. A complete list of our currently available collections can be found here.
The first for-profit academic institution to participate in JSTOR is BPP College of Professional Studies in the UK, the first publicly-owned private company in the UK to obtain degree awarding powers. We look forward to welcoming your institution in the future.

Collections at Aluka (www.aluka.org)
The following new content has been added to the Aluka collections.
The Heinz Rüther Collection
The cultural heritage site, Great Zimbabwe, has been added to the Heinz Rüther Collection. 831 digital objects, including 3D models, aerial photographs, and high-resolution photographs, have been added to the more than 7,000 geo-spatial objects and images already available. This adds to already extensive documentation of cultural heritage sites and landscapes from across Africa documented by Prof. Rüther and his team at the University of Cape Town.
By about 1270, a wealthy elite emerged at Great Zimbabwe and started laying the foundations for an elaborate urban complex than grew into state that traded in gold, ivory, cloth, and glass beads with the Swahili city states along the Indian Ocean coast. At its peak in the 14th and 15th centuries, Great Zimbabwe was one of the largest cities in sub-Saharan Africa, a metropolis of more than 700 hectares composed of elite residences, ritual centres, public forums, markets, and the houses of commoners and artisans. Great Zimbabwe was added to World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1986.

Collections at Aluka (www.aluka.org)
The following new content has been added to the Aluka collections.
The Chilcote Collection
Struggles for Freedom in Southern Africa Collection
The materials in the Chilcote Collection are drawn from Ronald H. Chilcote's collection on Portuguese-controlled Africa which is housed in part at the University of Southern California Libraries, where digitization of this collection took place. The selection in this collection has a particular focus on Mozambique. The collection contains magazines, press releases, letters, reports, constitutions, speeches, articles, and other types of resources. For additional information, please see a bibliography of the some 2200 documents that appear in two publications by Ronald H. Chilcote, Emerging Nationalism in Portuguese Africa: A Bibliography of Documentary Ephemera Through 1965 (Stanford, 1969) and in an accompanying volume, Emerging Nationalism in Portuguese Africa: Documents (Stanford, 1972). Both are available in our Core Readings Collection.

Pamphlet Collections From Leading UK Libraries Now Available
We are pleased to announce the initial release of pamphlets from the 19th Century British Pamphlets Project. Approximately 8,200 pamphlets were added to JSTOR today, including portions of the Knowsley Pamphlet Collection (University of Liverpool), Cowen Tracts (Newcastle University), and the Hume Tracts (University College London).
The 19th Century British Pamphlets collection is now freely accessible to all JSTOR participating institutions through June 30, 2009 as we work to evaluate delivery, presentation, and use of the content, and develop an understanding of how best to address the needs of researchers and students working with it. There will be regular releases of additional material during this pamphlet trial period.
19th Century British Pamphlets – Project Overview
More than 20,000 19th Century British pamphlets will be added to the JSTOR archive as part of this project. This collection of materials was created by RLUK (Research Libraries UK) with funding from the JISC Digitisation Programme to provide researchers with online access to some of the most significant collections of pamphlets held in UK institutions. The project is being led on behalf of RLUK by the University of Southampton Library, with all pamphlets being digitized within the library's specialist BOPCRIS digitization facility. The pamphlets are from collections held by: Newcastle University, Durham University, University of Manchester, UCL, University of Liverpool, London School of Economics and Political Science, and University of Bristol.
Usage Statistics for Pamphlets
Usage statistics for the pamphlet collections will be available to all participating institutions the week of February 2, 2009. A special option to request a report on pamphlet use will be a new choice on the "JSTOR Detailed Report Request Form" (stats.jstor.org).
Interface Changes
The addition of the pamphlets introduces a new content format into JSTOR. Consequently, we have modified the language on the website to more accurately reflect the expanding types of content held in JSTOR. Please see the JSTOR Sandbox for a short video and presentations that explain the changes.
ABOUT PAMPHLETS
Pamphlets were an important means of public debate in the 19th century, covering the key political, social, technological, and environmental issues of their day. They are a valuable primary resource relevant to a wide range of disciplines. They have been underutilized within research and teaching because they are generally quite difficult to access – often bound together in large numbers or otherwise hard to find in the few research libraries that hold them. The digitization of more than 20,000 pamphlets will provide researchers, students, and teachers with an immensely rich and coherent corpus of primary sources with which to study the socio-political and economic landscape of 19th century Britain.
- Pamphlets by and about: Charles Babbage, W.E. Gladstone, Florence Nightingale, Charles Bradlaugh, Joseph Hume, Thomas Paine, John Bright, John Stuart Mill, Robert Peel
- Valuable content inside and appended to pamphlets: Advertisements, diagrams and maps, petitions, annotations, engravings, portraits, cartoons, letters
- 7 Collections represented, including Selections from the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Earl Grey Pamphlets Collection, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Collection

ADDING PRIMARY SOURCES TO JSTOR
JSTOR is adding primary sources to the archive, widening the scope of content available to support research and teaching and providing additional building blocks for new scholarship. We aim to help the community save on system-wide costs by providing a common platform to disseminate and preserve a wide array of digitized materials and to enhance the value of digital collections by placing them in a broader intellectual context for discovery and use.

JSTOR and Ithaka Merge, Uniting Efforts to Serve the Scholarly Community
JSTOR and Ithaka today announced the merger of their organizations. This move unites two pioneering entities that are focused on helping the scholarly community take advantage of rapidly advancing information technologies.
JSTOR was founded in 1995 by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as a shared digital library to help academic institutions save costs associated with the storage of library materials and to vastly improve access to scholarship. Today, more than 5,200 academic institutions and 600 scholarly publishers and content owners participate in JSTOR. Ithaka was started in 2003 by Kevin Guthrie, the original founder of JSTOR, with funding from the Mellon Foundation as well as The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation. Ithaka was established to aid promising not-for-profit digital initiatives and to provide research and insight on important strategic issues facing the academic community. Ithaka has become known for its influential reports including the 2007 University Publishing in A Digital Age and the 2008 Sustainability and Revenue Models for Online Academic Resources. It is the organizational home to Portico, a digital preservation service, and NITLE, a suite of services supporting the use of technology in liberal arts education.
The new combined enterprise will be called Ithaka and will be dedicated to helping the academic community use digital technologies to advance scholarship and teaching and to reducing system-wide costs through collective action.
This is a natural step for these organizations. JSTOR and Ithaka already work closely together, sharing a common history, values, and fundamental purpose. During 2008, the Ithaka-incubated resource Aluka was integrated into JSTOR as an initial step, further strengthening ties between the organizations. JSTOR will now join Portico and NITLE as a coordinated set of offerings made available under the Ithaka organizational name.
As one organization, Ithaka will explore how to use its combined knowledge and experience to help its constituents in new ways. "The academic community has invested significantly in the important set of services that we manage and, together, they represent core elements of the networked digital infrastructure needed to support scholarship, research, and teaching. Increasingly we are approached for help on a range of initiatives that seek to leverage this investment and that we think will benefit from stronger coordination across all our areas of expertise and activity," said Guthrie. "We are very excited about the potential to work with our constituents in even more useful innovative ways through this combination."
The organization will also remain steadfastly committed to enabling institutions to maximize the benefits they provide to scholars and students while containing expenses. Michael Spinella, Executive Director of JSTOR and now Executive Vice President of Ithaka added, "JSTOR and Ithaka have a history of helping academic institutions by building and managing collectively-supported large-scale resources with an aim of developing sustainable models that deliver greater value than institutions could achieve alone. Now is the time when we can work even more closely together to develop and sustain the kinds of shared solutions that will be vital to the success of educational institutions in the future."
In addition to JSTOR, Portico, and NITLE, Ithaka's existing research and strategic services groups will remain important parts of the enterprise. The board will be composed of Ithaka and JSTOR Trustees, with Henry Bienen, President of Northwestern University, serving as Chairman and Paul Brest, President of the Hewlett Foundation as Vice Chairman.

JSTOR Update
Pamphlet collections from leading UK libraries to be released in JSTOR
We are pleased to announce the upcoming release of more than 20,000 19th Century British pamphlets into the JSTOR archive. This collection of materials was created by RLUK (Research Libraries UK) with funding from the JISC Digitisation Programme to provide researchers with online access to some of the most significant collections of pamphlets held in UK institutions. The pamphlets are from collections held by: University of Newcastle, Durham University, University of Manchester, UCL, University of Liverpool, London School of Economics and Political Science, and University of Bristol.
Free Access until June 30, 2009
The first set of approximately 8,000 pamphlets will be available at the end of January 2009, followed by regular releases of additional material. They will be freely accessible to all JSTOR participating institutions through June 30, 2009 as we work to evaluate delivery, presentation, and use of the content, and develop an understanding of how best to address the needs of researchers and students working with it.
Preview the Interface Changes
The addition of the pamphlets will introduce a new content format into JSTOR. Consequently, we are adjusting the language on the website to more accurately reflect the expanding types of content held in JSTOR. These changes will take place at the end of January in conjunction with the availability of the pamphlet content.

- Collections represented, including Selections from the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Earl Grey Pamphlets Collection, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Collection
