INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS
Ethics is an international journal of moral, political, and legal philosophy. It publishes work from disciplines that have a normative dimension, including philosophy; law; and social, economic, and political theory. Work that draws on more than one disciplinary approach is especially welcome, as are contributions from outside the United States. Essays should avoid unnecessary technicality and strive to be accessible to the widest possible audience without sacrificing clarity and rigor. Ethics publishes both theory and the application of theory to contemporary moral issues. Historical essays are welcome, provided they have significant implications for contemporary theory. Unsolicited book reviews are not accepted.
Correspondence. Please address editorial correspondence to Ethics, Healy 426, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20057. Telephone: 202-687-4739. Email: ethicsjournal@georgetown.edu.
Manuscripts. Submission of a manuscript to Ethics is understood to imply that the manuscript is not under consideration by any other journal and is offered to Ethics for first publication.
Ethics places a premium on original, well-argued work that also exhibits felicity of expression. In the interest of expediting the review process and increasing chances of a successful submission, authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts that have been carefully edited with an eye to structure and style. Although different types of articles require more or less space, the editors generally prefer articles of 5,000-12,000 words and suggest that authors limit their manuscripts to fewer than 15,000 words (inclusive of notes). Manuscripts longer than that will receive especially stringent scrutiny.
Ethics encourages the submission of comments on articles previously published in the journal. All such contributions, which should be of 6,000 words or less, including notes, will be reviewed by an expedited procedure and, if accepted, published in the first available issue.
Authors are asked to submit manuscripts electronically using the Ethics Editorial Manager system at http://ethics.edmgr.com. Please use one of the following four formats when submitting your manuscript using this system: any recent version of Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), PDF (.pdf), WordPerfect (.wpd), and Rich Text Format (.rtf). Ethics no longer accepts submissions on paper or via email.
In preparing a manuscript for submission, please note the following: footnotes should appear at the bottom of the relevant page; margins should be 1 inch on all sides; font size should be 12-point; and everything should be double spaced, including quotations and footnotes. In addition, please ensure that the manuscript is anonymous by deleting all self-identifying references and any thanks to specific people from the text and notes and putting them in a separate file. Please prepare an abstract of less than 250 words to upload with the manuscript.
To include a cover letter, your biographical note, or other collateral material with your electronic submission, please prepare each item as a separate file for uploading to Editorial Manager. If your manuscript contains figures, you will need to submit these in separate files in TIFF (.tif) or EPS (.eps) format. Do not use GIF (.gif) or JPEG (.jpg) format. If you are submitting a revised draft and wish to include responses to the comments of the reviewers on your earlier draft, put these responses in the appropriate box.
