Durham University was founded in 1832 and from the start attracted major collections into its library. Today the library contains over 1.5 million printed items and provides a wide range of electonic resources on its modern main site. At its Palace Green site the library houses extensive special collections including two which have gained Designated status — the Sudan Archive and Bishop Cosin's Library. Altogether there are over 70,000 books printed before 1850; 3,400 metres of archives; 100 medieval manuscripts; 30,000 maps and prints and 100,000 photographs. Amongst its major collections are the political and family papers of the Earls Grey covering the 18th – 20th centuries, from which items have been digitised to contribute to the RLUK 19th Century Pamphlets Online project.
