National Herbarium & Botanic Garden Publisher Description
The National Herbarium and Botanic Garden (SRGH) of Zimbabwe is located four (4) kilometers north of the city centre at corner Fifth Street Extension and Downie Avenue in Alexandra Park, Harare.  It falls under the Department of Research and Specialist Services within the Research Services Division in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization and Irrigation Development. Its mandate is to conduct taxonomic research on the plants of Zimbabwe and beyond its borders in order to promote their conservation, development and sustainable use.

The National Herbarium houses at least 500 000 dried plant specimens with more than 3000 type specimens and at least 214 Endemic or near Endemic plant species with the first collection date from 1902.  These are systematically and geographically arranged and are continuously updated and re-arranged following new publication (Flora Zambesiaca, Kew Bulletin, Monographs and other recognized journals). Most of Zimbabwean collection has been computerized with the type specimens also digitized. Apart from the dried plant specimens, the herbarium also houses plant specimens in spirit preservative mostly succulent plants.

The National Botanic Garden comprises of around 90% of the woody flora of Zimbabwe that are arranged in plant communities found in various parts of the country like the wet forests, miombo woodland, the lowveld, systematic sections, economic section, desert house and exotic sections. Apart from these sections, there are additional features like the Restaurant, and the Education Centre. Mazowe Botanic Reserve is 48 hectares in extend under in-situ conservation comprising of miombo woodland, the riparian vegetation along Mazowe River and scenic granite kopjes.
