This article presents a largely neglected publication of the famous Hiob Ludolf (1624–1704), the founding father of Ethiopan studies in Europe: The edition of the Ethiopic Book of Psalms that was printed in Classical Ethiopic only, without the Latin translation and a scholarly apparatus. The article shows that this edition was a by-product of Ludolf's critical edition of the Ethiopic Psalms and argues that it was meant to play a role as a gesture of good-will in the aspirations to reach an anti-Ottoman alliance of Germany and other European powers with Ethiopia.
