    E.J. Pratt grew up on the Newfoundland seacoast, where the poet is most often a storyteller and where the poem, like the folk song, has a public function in affirming community, celebrating heroes, and lamenting death. Although he left Newfoundland in his mid-twenties, his poetic imagination continually returned to the seascapes of his childhood.
