Abstract The purpose of this note is to present a variety of proofs of \documentclass{article} \pagestyle{empty}\begin{document} $$g^2 = \left( \frac{-1}{p} \right) p$$ \end{document} (some well known and others perhaps less so), using techniques from different branches of number theory, each providing its own insight.
