To determine the factorial nature of attitudes toward education, a scale with 23 A ("Progressivism") and 23 B ("Traditionalism") items was administered to teachers and graduate education students in New York, North Carolina, and Texas. First-order factor analysis of the item intercorrelations of the New York sample yielded eight factors, five with A-item loadings and three with B-item loadings. The A factors were named "Experimentalism," "Reconstructionism," "Life Adjustment," "Children's Needs," and "Academic Freedom," the B factors "Criticism of the Schools," "Learning as Knowledge Storehouse," and "Educational Conservatism." Second-order analysis yielded two factors with the first-order A factors on one factor and the B factors on the other.
