Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the linguistic structure of ten 2nd-grade and eleven 5th-grade teachers' oral classroom language. The teachers were all women with a bachelor's degree or higher and one or more years of teaching experiences. Following a period to acquaint the teacher with the equipment being used, four 40-minute periods were tape-recorded by means of a wireless recording system for each teacher during the period of January to March 1965. The transcripts provided data on amount of teacher talk, number of syntactic units, structural patterns of main clauses, component parts of the structural patterns, subordinating clauses and vocabulary diversification. Descriptive statistics were used. Some probabilities were computed. The description of the teachers language is reported. No major differences between the groups of teachers at the two grade levels were noted.
