Abstract

This paper reports a study which explores the relationship between need orientation of teachers and their preference for leadership style in principals. The Choice Motivator Scale was used to differentiate between teachers whose need orientations were described as hygienic (extrinsic-avoidance) and teachers whose need orientations were described as motivator (intrinsic-approach). Preference for leadership style was measured by the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire XII. While the investigators hypothesized that style preferences would vary with need orientations of teachers, the findings appear not to contradict traditional notions regarding leadership style. That is, regardless of need orientation type, teachers seem to prefer integrative leadership styles characterized by both initiating structure (systems orientation) and consideration (person orientation).
