Recent taxonomic treatments of the cultivated species of Capsicum are discussed and divergent opinions on the names to be employed for some of these demonstrated. It is concluded that five species are widely cultivated and that the correct names for these are C. pubescens R. & P., C. annuum L., C. baccatum L., C. frutescens L., and C. chinense Jacq.
