Abstract

Facilities aboard the Eltanin, the "floating research laboratory," are discussed. The scope of activities extends from upper atmosphere research to bottom coring, although biology is the most apparent discipline. The vessel, specifically converted for research in the Southern Ocean, is operated for the National Science Foundation by the Military Sea Transportation Service.
