The genus Proetides from the Lower Mississippian of the Mississippi Valley is redefined. It is placed in the Brachymetopidae and compared to other genera in this family. The genotype, P. insignis, is redescribed on the basis of new material, and a new species, P. colemani, is described. Many differences between the cephala of the two species are due to the deep vertical outer surface of the border of P. insignis being folded under in P. colemani to assume a subhorizontal position.
