Welles' (1983) challenge of the identification of an astragalus from the Lower Cretaceous of Victoria as that of Allosaurus sp. fails on several grounds. The H:B ratio estimate was too great and other differences from Allosaurus fragilis are either non-existent or represent likely autapomorphies. Welles did not discuss the synapomorphies. Thus the identification still stands.
