Abstract

Densities of Neotoma floridana smalli and Peromyscus gossypinus allapaticola were estimated in tropical forest on northern Key Largo, Florida, by use of large, nested-trapping grids and probability models from computer program CAPTURE. The assumption of population closure was satisfied. Population density in most grids was nonuniform, probably because rodents were attracted to grids. A model that included assumption of heterogeneous capture probabilities usually was selected for estimating densities. Three grids near housing subdivisions averaged 3.1 woodrats and 15.5 cotton mice/ha, and three distant from such development averaged 12.2 woodrats and 26.9 cotton mice/ha. Extrapolation over the 851 ha of occupied forest suggests total populations of approximately 6,500 woodrats and 18,000 cotton mice.
