Abstract

Using contemporary and historical data on religion in Canada, the article argues that recent rational choice/religious market theories as represented especially by Stark, Finke, and Iannaccone are both useful and limited. Competition among Christian denominations was indeed instrumental in the nineteenth-century "churching" of Canada, but this victory of voluntaristic and evangelical/devotional denominationalism brought about deregulation, not the other way around. The development also supports the secularization thesis in that denominationalism was a response to structural secularization. The decline of liberal Protestant and Catholic denominations in Canada after 1960 is then analyzed as the decline of denominationalism in a changed post-World War II atmosphere, and not necessarily the secularization of these same denominations. "Supply-side" explanations of the same decline are criticized as inadequate because they cannot account for the timing of the decline or the relative failure of other providers to "re-church" the leavers. Secularization theory is criticized for not leaving sufficient room for the possible maintenance of religious influence under conditions of structural secularization.
