Macristiella perlucens, a new genus and species of fish, is described from a small specimen taken in the western Gulf of Mexico. It is related to Macristium chavesi Regan of the previously monotypic family Macristiidae. The relationships of this family are discussed and it is placed in a new suborder, Macristoidei, of the order Clupeiformes (sensu lato).
