A taxonomic re-definition is provided for Achalinus formosanus, and a new subspecies, A. formosanus chigirai, is described from Iriomotejima Island, the Ryukyu Archipelago. Intraspecific variation is recognized in the diagnostic character of Achalinopsis Steindachner, and the name is regarded as invalid. Achalinopsis sauteri Steindachner is thus synonymized with Achalinus formosanus Boulenger on the basis of morphological features. A key to the genus Achalinus is provided.
