The necessity of a folkloric classification of all those symbolic and material features together with the imaginary ones, which are the fundamental elements of a folkloric research, goes along with history of the folkloric discipline itself. As an introduction to "Types and Classification of Folklore" by R. S. Boggs (1950), the essay considers the various patterns and proposals of classifications wich have been appearing during the history of folkloric studies. Approach Bogg's system taking into consideration the italian anthropologist A. M. Cirese has said about it, and try to find in bibliographies and methodological essays the features of the concept of folklore as has been evolving through the various proposals of classification. Bogg's classification system is enclosed in its integry at the end of our article.
