This review of research on the nomadic peoples of Iran, following a clockwise geographical route from the southeast to the northeast of the country, has inspired several observations on the nomadic movement, its strategic use of adaptation, production and politics, its presence in a wide range of environments and societies, its variability within and among societies at any specific time, and its variability in time within the same society.
