This essay examines certain features of the link between natural and technical knowledge in cattle breeding. The author discusses some points which are peculiar to traditional folk knowledge: its subordinate position to scientific knowledge, its link with a specific geographical and socio-economic context, its mode of transmission (which is usually oral and often almost visual) and its empirical rather than theoretical character, arising from daily experience, evolving traditions and widespread circulation, though not equally shared by lower classes.
