The author takes a wide sweeping look at the literature on the problems in the sociology of art published in the last decade. Analysing the writings in this field up to the work of T. Adorno, he arranges the existing material with an attempt at defining how we stand with regard to a sociology of art. At the same time an attempt is made to indicate a possible way out of the impass of this discipline by emphasizing certain works, the methodological value of which have not been fully taken advantage of in sociological research on art.
