Abstract

Chickens that had never been without food or water were subjected to feed deprivation of 2 days duration on successive weeks. Both periods of feed deprivation resulted in similar reductions in body weight. The first period of feed deprivation resulted in a much more severe heterophil/lymphocyte ratio response to stress than the second period of feed deprivation. When the initial fast was followed 1 week later by 2 days of water deprivation, the heterophil/lymphocyte ratio response was similar to that of a similar flock of chickens that did not fast before the period of water deprivation. /// Pollos que nunca habían estado sin comida ni agua fueron sometidos a un ayuno de dos días de duración en semanas sucesivas. Ambos ayunos resultaron en disminuciones similares en el peso corporal. El primer ayuno resultó en una respuesta mucho más severa sobre la proporción heterófilo/linfocito que en el ayuno secundario. Cuando el ayuno inicial fué seguido (una semana más tarde) de dos días de privación de agua, la respuesta sobre la proporción heterófilo/linfocito fué similar a la respuesta de una parvada semejante de pollos que no fué sometida a un ayuno antes del período de privación de agua.
