Abstract

Alternative approaches are outlined, and a particular approach is developed, to illustrate options in designing a salary structure appropriate for an institution. Attention is given to context of personnel techniques, objectives served, relative role of automatic and discretionary increments, rationale of salary components, academic freedom considerations, budget constraints, and inflation.
