Agricultural trade within the EEC is complicated by the changing relative international value of the currencies of the member states. A series of subsidies and taxes have been constructed to encourage free trade in the face of these divergent currencies. These add considerably to the costs of the common agricultural policy but are inevitable pending full monetary union.
