Data from the New Earnings Survey are used to analyse the relationship between unemployment and earnings in the counties of Great Britain during the period 1978 to 1983. It is found that the relationship between levels of unemployment and earnings is generally weak. However, when changes in unemployment and changes in earnings during this time period are compared, stronger relationships are found for male manual workers. It is concluded that, contrary to the conclusions of some previous studies, earnings have responded to the varying impact of unemployment in different parts of Great Britain.
