Excision orthoplasty consisting of left femoral head and neck ostectomy was performed on an adult female Giant anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla, due to chronic bilateral degenerative joint disease of the coxofemoral joints. Surgery was performed following chronic rear leg lameness, gradual weight loss and general decreased function and activity of the animal over a period of several years. A severely affected joint was disclosed and the surgery consisted of a successful salvage procedure following the anteater's anesthetic recovery, a steady weight gain and a return to moderate function of the operated limb over a period of several weeks.
