Abel Matutes has been a member of the European Commission, a member of the European Parliament is now Spain's Foreign Affairs minister —attending, as such, the European Council of Ministers. This long experience in EU affairs forms the background against which the author offers a personal reflection of Spain's role in the European Union, and puts forward some ideas on how to address the immense challenges the continent is facing.
