The newly reelected president of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, has ahead another four years to guide his country to a sustained economic recovery while seeking at the same time to deal with the highly unequal income distribution he has inherited. It will not be easy: at the present juncture of the international economy, Brazil represents one of the last bulwarks between mild global recession and the possibility of more serious decline.
