Abstract

Among James B. Griffin's published works are two significant and influential syntheses of Midwestern and Eastern United States prehistory: "Cultural Change and Continuity in Eastern United States Archaeology" published in 1946, and "Eastern North American Archaeology: A Summary" published in 1967. In both papers, especially the later one, he emphasizes means of subsistence as a major causal variable in aboriginal social and cultural development in that region. One of the most important means of recovering subsistence data is flotation of archaeological deposits. In this paper, the major varieties of flotation techniques currently in use are described, and the theoretical and methodological significance of flotation is discussed.
