Abstract

Interpretations of social context are an integral part of postulated models of exchange mechanisms—exchange of both objects and concepts. Interpretations of Classic Ohio Hopewell societies are derived from detailed analyses of burial data from Seip Mound 1, the Raymond Ater Mound, and the Turner Burial Place. Based upon a methodological framework of ranking variables, ranksums, and nonparametric comparison tests, the use of a detailed description of burial attributes for each individual of a burial population makes possible the identification of components of the social structure (defined as identifiable groups of individuals), and an interpretation of social organization (defined as the relationships within and between components) at each site. The descriptive variables include measures of tomb size and materials, burial form, associated artifacts, age and sex (when available), and relative location within the burial population. The results illustrate a range of social structure and complexity within Ohio Hopewell.
