Abstract

Salvage data from Mound 3 at the Lake Jackson site reveal a major Mississippian center. The varieties of incised and punctated ceramics attest to the Mississippian identification of this culture. Burial artifacts of copper, lead, mica, steatite, and other special resources attest to association in a network of exchange which allowed this center to receive these resources, artistic influences, and possibly artifacts from areas north and west of Florida. Cult or Southeastern Ceremonial Complex artifacts from Mound 3, including repoussé copper plates, copper headdress badges or spangles and related artifacts, and engraved shell gorgets, indicate similarities in artistic styles and shared design elements with such other major centers as Spiro, Moundville, and Etowah. While perhaps beginning with all three centers, early Lake Jackson has strongest ties with Etowah. Most of the Cult artifacts are, however, unique in design to the Lake Jackson site. Their associated contexts, which appear to represent several centuries, indicate that the Indians of this site were influenced by several style systems during the development of this center.
