Abstract

This study provides a detailed review of the efforts to achieve crystallization of blood pigment, as were undertaken since Hünefeld (in 1840) and Reichert (in 1847) till Hoppe-Seyler and Preyer in the sixties and seventies of the nineteenth century. Among the experiments of other notable men of science, those of C.G. Lehmann and Boettcher, who applied gases, and Rollett, who used electrolysis, are described. The opinions of these researchers as to the nature of blood and of its coloring matter as well as their attempts to characterize some physiological properties are documented together with some assumptions voiced by earlier scientists.
