Abstract

It is the aim of this essay to counter the critics who argue that distinguished literary achievement is absent in today's Southern novel. The theory of literary decline is untenable in the face of the impressive output of contemporary Southern novelists. Fortunately, the vitality of the Southern novel is still undeniable in the 80's. And this is reflected in the art of Walker Percy, Madison Jones, and Barry Hannah, whose novels exemplify the continuity and change of the novel in the American South.
