Abstract

The causes of the Philippine Revolution of 1896-1898 ultimately led to a large-scale schism of the Catholic church in the islands. During its expansive stage (1902-1906) the nationalist religious movement assumed a complex spatial pattern that was related to the varied regional attributes of the colonial church and to the nature of Filipino religious participation on the eve of the Revolution. The geography of schism is specifically related to the rates at which various regions produced and employed indigenous priests. Protestant proselytism followed American conquest. With a few exceptions, Protestant adherence developed early in regions in which the schismatic movement was also strong.
