Abstract

The paper traces the origins of Glasgow's housing problem and reviews the attempts of successive governments during the last century to alleviate the chronic conditions of urban decay. The study begins by placing the city's housing problem in the British context. The factors behind the development of the current housing situation are then examined. Policies based on estates, overspill, new towns, comprehensive redevelopment, high-rise building, and rehabilitation are discussed.
