Abstract

(1) A description is given of the topography, climate and soils of the Imatong mountains of the Sudan-Uganda border, and the main biotic influences on the vegetation are discussed. (2) The vegetation of the various altitudinal zones is described, and the succession from fire-climax grassland to the climax vegetation is outlined for each zone. (3) A short account is given of the relationship between the Imatongs and that of other East African mountains. On the analogy of successions observed in the Imatong mountains it is suggested that some of the characteristic plant communities described from East Africa, in particular the Hagenia-Hypericum zone, may be seral stages produced by human interference with the vegetation.
