The crisis of historicism corresponds to the change in the concept of historical development. It is necessary for classical historicism, which is essentially élitist, to be replaced by a historical criticism able to deal with the numerous historical periods and the diversity of culture. History must broaden its outlook, eliminate its élitist and Eurocentric position, so as to recognize itself as a human undertaking in the widest sense of the word, an essential condition for the forming of the historical conscience so necessary to sociology. Obviously the problems and difficulties this «new history» must face cannot be diregarded.
