Abstract

Elias Canetti won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981, but he more than a great writer; as a scholar, he extensively worked on problems related to power and mass phenomena. It is therefore interesting to compare his thoughts with the reflections of those social theorists who, during the XX century, worked on these central themes: members of the Frankfurt School, Mannheim, Ortega y Gasset, N. Elias, C. Wright Mills and D. Riesman. The article's objective is to verify and assess the contribution offered to sociological theory by an approach based on different categorial sets.
