Studies show that the effects of the Single European Market on UK manufacturing and service sectors are mixed; in manufacturing, high-tech industries will fare better than traditional ones, while the service sector generally will compete with other EC countries more strongly than the manufacturing sector. The impact of the SEM on the UK regions and regional policy is difficult to predict and is confused by the conflicting aims of both national and EC policies.
