Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to prove the existence of an hitherto unknown kabbalistic school, which flourished under the influence of Rabbi David ben Yehudah he-Ḥasid throughout the fourteenth century. Some unidentified texts written by members of this school are printed here, and they evince that R. David was the master of some kabbalists who were themselves masters of other kabbalists. The texts include theories that are central in R. David's books — such as the additional ten Sefirot (called Ẓaḥẓaḥot or Ẓiḥẓuḥim) arrayed above the ten known ones and elaborated discussions of the theory of Da'at, the supplementary "Sefirah" that mediates between Ḥokhmah and Binah. These kabbalistic theories influenced Rabbi Shem Tov ben Shem Tov's Sefer ha-Emunot, as well as other kabbalistic treatises.
