Investigations on the electric conductance of the vascular sap of the tropical liana Bauhinia splendens were carried out in the Amazon-rain forest. The values range between 200 and 1000 μS, the pH-values between 5.1 and 6.5. The inverse correlation between conductance and pH is due to the high mobility of the H-ion. In comparison with the soil water in the vicinity of the Bauhinia-roots the content of electrolyts of the sap is 20—100 times higher. It was not possibel to measure the oxigen content of the Bauhinia sap with the Winkler-method but in other-not identified-lianas the vascular sap was in all cases undersaturated in oxigen.
