Abstract

The article attempts to reconstruct as full a list as possible of the names of the Jewish residents of Jerusalem from 1760 to 1763 on the basis of the financial ledgers of the Jewish community. The list allows us to conclude that about 3000 out of the city's total population of 12000-15000 at this time were Jews. The number of Jews who paid the jizya (poll tax, levied only on non-Muslims) was 400, out of a total of about 700 Jewish males who resided in the city. From the list of names, we can ascertain that the overwhelming majority was of Sephardic origin and that the Sephardic community was in the effect the Jewish community of Jerusalem. Pilgrims formed another important and permanent element in the Jewish population, though the individuals who made up this group, of course, changed incessantly.
