Abstract

Joshua Benbenest, a significant rabbi and author of halachic works in seventeenth-century Constantinople, wrote a short, four-chapter tract, as yet unpublished, called Perek Beshir (A Chapter about Poetry). Its last chapter deals with the goal of poetry. Here, the author, in accordance with Plato's Republic, says that poetry does not deserve to exist in and of itself, but, rather, should be of moral and other utilitarian value by serving the community. This article reproduces the fourth chapter, preceded by my survey of Medieval Arabic and Jewish poetics dealing with the goal of poetry.
