The conceptual framework for analyzing productivity changes is presented together with historical trends. The author's theory of the chief causes of productivity advances are discussed and the post-1966 slow-down in productivity analyzed in light of the theory. Finally, the productivity outlook is developed using the theoretical framework put forward.
