Abstract

This article on church and theology in the writings of Theodor Fontane (1819—1898), by a German author with Calvinist roots, looks into his concepts of grace and predestination. Demonstrating that the affirmation 'everything is grace' was of decisive autobiographical significance for Fontane and also played a key role in his novels from a hermeneutic point of view, the essay shows that, for Fontane, grace and predestination can be seen as means of determining God's care for the preservation of the world and humanity and not as the epitome of God's redeeming deeds. The article shows eight dimensions of the concept of predestination and grace in the work of the most important German writer in the second half of the 19th century.
