Abstract

In this paper, the author discusses the biography of R. Menaḥem b. R. Simai in an attempt to determine his epoch, and delves into the problem whether he was a Tanna or an Amora. The solution to this problem is further enhanced by the fact that it enables a proper understanding of one of the oddest literary forms in the Babylonian Talmud.
