Abstract

In ridiculing and abusing the idols and their large hollows the Sages had mainly the beautiful huge statues in mind. The purpose of this ridicule was to arouse a sense of disgust and revulsion in the Jewish spectator towards their unusual beauty. The style employed by the Sages follows the pattern of the later pagan cynic philosophers and the Christians of that time.
