The purpose of the study was to determine the degree of readiness of Arab youth for normal social relationships with Jews. This was done by means of a comparison of native born Israeli Arab youth and youth of the West Bank on the assumption that the former which is more exposed to contact with Israelis and more involved in the life of the State would evaluate Israeli images more positively. The sample consisted of 242 Christian and Moslem grade-twelve children from both Israel and the West Bank. The research tool was a questionnaire by the semantic differential method which is constructed from a number of national images on scales made up of bi-polar descriptions. From the findings it is evident that the differences of image reflect mainly whether the subjects are from the West Bank or residents of the State. Among the West Bank subjects Israeli and Lebanese Jews are rated lowest while among the Israeli subjects they are conceived quite positively, especially Israeli Jews. The outstanding finding is the relatively positive attitude of the Arabs of Israel to images connected with Israel. This finding strengthens the credence of answers of Arab schoolchildren in earlier studies. Differences between religious groups, without regard to place of residence, are small by comparison. The relative acceptance by the Arab youth of Israeli citizenship is expressed also in reasons for leaving the country. He is certainly not without a national dream either but it seems that he is more troubled than his brother in Nablus by the problem of his integration in Israeli society. The Arab born in the State tends to identify also with Israeli images and his attitude to the Jew is no longer an antithesis to his Arab identity. On the other hand the Arabs of the West Bank keep away from anything connected with Israel, even from their own brethren there.
